Rasik D. Raval, born in Gujarat in 1928, studied at the J.J. School of Art during India’s Independence. After graduating in 1949, he faced severe hardship, even painting on pavements until art connoisseur Farokh Mulla offered him a studio. Working in isolation, Raval sought to refresh ancient Indian art forms without losing their soul. He developed a distinctive style featuring stylized, elongated figures rendered in flat, elementary colors like white and gold. By placing ordinary people—tribal dancers, fisherwomen, and fruit sellers—against vibrant backgrounds, he elevated the mundane. His lyrical brushwork and simplicity recall the directness of Bhimbetka cave paintings and Warli art.
