Ved Nayar, born in Lyallpur in 1933 in pre-Partition Punjab, found his earliest creative inspiration in the jungle surrounding his home. After moving to Delhi as a teenager following Partition, he earned a B.A. from St. Stephen’s College in 1952 and joined Delhi Polytechnic in 1957. Beginning as a painter, Nayar later embraced sculpture, installation, digital print, and photography. His early abstract works evolved into an iconic elongated human figure, mostly female, dwelling between earth and sky. His art addresses human and environmental concerns, mass consumerism, and cultural globalisation, while exploring man’s quest for immortality. Nayar won the 1981 Lalit Kala Akademi national award for his sculpture Mankind-2101 and designed the citation trophy for the Jawaharlal Nehru Award in 1988. He lives and works in New Delhi.
