Ved Nayar (b. 1933, Lyallpur, pre-Partition Punjab) is a distinguished Indian contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and archival digital print. His early creative experiences were shaped by his close engagement with the natural environment surrounding his childhood home. After moving to Delhi following Partition, he studied at St. Stephen’s College and later joined Delhi Polytechnic. Beginning as a painter, Nayar gradually developed an abstract visual language with ritual associations, eventually creating elongated human forms, predominantly female, suspended between earth and sky. His work engages with human and environmental concerns, mass consumerism, cultural globalisation, and humanity’s quest for immortality. In 1981, he received the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award for his sculpture Mankind-2101. Nayar lives and works in New Delhi.
