S. G. Vasudev, born in Mysore, completed his fine arts diploma from Government College of Art and Craft, Madras, in 1968, deeply influenced by K. C. S. Paniker. While still a student, he won Lalit Kala Akademi’s national award in 1967. He became known for his Vriksha series, which evolved into the Mithuna series exploring vegetal and human sexual imagery, followed by celebrated works like He & She, Hayavadana, Ganesha, and humanscapes. Vasudev has also collaborated with master weavers on silk tapestries and worked in copper engraving, beaten metal, and batik. Initially using heavy impasto, he later integrated the linear impulse of south Indian style with colour and lyricism, framed by simple geometric shapes. A founder-member of Cholamandal Artists’ Village with Paniker, he lived there until 1988 and now works in Bengaluru.
