Niren Sengupta

Niren Sengupta, born in January 1940, is an Indian contemporary artist and academic known for his cubist-inspired paintings and spiritual themes. Born into a jute-trading business family, he initially completed a science degree at the University of Calcutta before pursuing formal art education at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. His artistic practice was influenced by Buddhist legends and the philosophy of the Ramakrishna Mission. Sengupta’s paintings combine geometric forms with vibrant colours and often feature nature, animals, birds, and human life. He taught art at graduate and postgraduate levels for over three decades and served as Principal of the Delhi College of Art from 1992 to 1998. He also co-founded Gallery 26 in Kolkata and served as an executive member of the Academy of Visual Media, New Delhi.
