Laxman Pai, born in Margao, Goa, on 21 January 1926, was an artist who vividly captured his home state’s lush landscapes and vibrant life. He studied and later taught at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay. A contemporary of F. N. Souza, Pai participated in Gandhi’s Satyagraha and Goa’s liberation movement, yet Goa remained his primary inspiration. Calling himself his own guru, he developed a unique style, enriched during a decade in Paris. Influenced by Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, and Joan Miro, Pai blended traditional Indian folk art with modern techniques like angular simplification and flat pictorial surfaces, creating an eclectic, vigorous, and colorful body of work devoid of moralistic narrative.
