K. C. S. Paniker

K. C. S. Paniker (1911–1977) was an Indian metaphysical and abstract painter from Malabar and a leading figure of the Madras Art Movement. He began painting landscapes at the age of twelve and later studied at the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai. In 1944, he founded the Progressive Painters’ Association in Chennai. Paniker held exhibitions in India and internationally, including London and Paris, and became principal of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, in 1957. His artistic practice evolved from colourful landscapes towards metaphysical abstraction, incorporating calligraphy, symbols, and spiritual ideas. In 1966, he founded the Cholamandal Artists’ Village near Chennai with his students and fellow artists. In 1976, he received the Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi for his lifetime contribution to Indian art.
