Jogen Chowdhury

Jogen Chowdhury (born 1939) is an eminent Indian painter who lives and works in Santiniketan. He studied at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and later at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. His distinctive style developed after his return to India, with ink, watercolour, and pastel among his principal mediums. Chowdhury is renowned for his mastery of line and his expressive distortion of human figures, often combining caricature with strong emotional and tactile qualities. His work draws upon Indian artistic traditions while exploring contemporary experiences. He joined Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, as a professor of painting in 1987 and has contributed significantly to art education. He has received several honours, including the Kalidas Samman, Banga Bibhushan, and Zainul Samman.
