Govind Raman

G. Raman is an accomplished artist known for intricate designs, colourful figures, and a distinctive use of indigenous motifs. He has lived for more than sixty years in the same Chennai house where he grew up, which has also served as his artist studio for the past four decades. Raman has received twenty-nine awards, including three international honours, and his works are widely collected. Drawing from traditional Indian art, he explores the purity of line and ornate patterns to define form and tone. His subjects primarily include figures and events from Hindu mythology, while also engaging with Christian imagery. His signature style combines classic Indian imagery, voluptuous deities, and graceful human figures with lace-like linear tracery, often set against predominantly blackish backgrounds. His works are marked by rich texture, colour, and energy.
