Gayoor Hassan

Hassan Gayoor was born in Dalgate, Srinagar, in 1939. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from M.S. University of Baroda in 1970 and later taught at the Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Srinagar, where he eventually became its principal. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Music & Fine Arts at the University of Kashmir from 1990 to 1998. Gayoor pioneered the Kashmir Artists’ Guild in 1971 and contributed to the contemporary sculpture movement in Kashmir. He participated in national and international exhibitions from 1962, with his works displayed at galleries in New Delhi and Mumbai. He received several awards, including the Sadiq Memorial Award, a Lifetime Achievement citation, and the honour of “Veteran Artist of India” in 2003. He passed away in 2013.
