Dilip Dasgupta

Dilip Dasgupta (1931– ) has been a prominent figure in the Indian art scene for over four decades, renowned for his dramatic and meticulously rendered landscapes in oil and watercolour. Born in Shimla, he studied art at Delhi Polytechnic and later pursued his education in Naples, Italy. His poetic landscapes, infused with romanticism, reflect a deep connection with nature, from the misty mountains of Himachal Pradesh to the sacred landscapes of Varanasi. His watercolours particularly capture the serene Ganges, ancient temples, and ascetics along the riverbanks. Dasgupta has held over fifty solo exhibitions in India and abroad and received several honours, including the 1962 President’s Plaque at AIFACS, the National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, and an Italian Government Scholarship. He also served as Professor of Painting at Banaras Hindu University and has influenced generations of artists through his teaching and practice.
