Dhiraj Choudhury (1936–2018) was an Indian painter renowned for addressing social realities and inequalities through his art. Born in Bengal, he developed an interest in painting during his childhood and later taught at the College of Art in New Delhi from 1961 to 1966. Having experienced the trauma of the Partition, Choudhury described himself as an “aggressive painter,” responding to a life marked by suffering and social challenges. His works often reflected his concerns about issues such as the dowry system, corruption, and social inequality. Throughout his career, his paintings were showcased in over eighty exhibitions, including sixteen international exhibitions. Choudhury continued to engage with social and human concerns through his artistic practice until his death on June 1, 2018, at the age of 82.
