Arpana Caur (b. 1954) is an Indian contemporary painter and graphic artist known for exploring women’s experiences, social realities, life and death, violence, and the environment. Born in Delhi, she developed an early interest in art and was largely self-taught, later receiving training in etching at Garhi Studios, New Delhi. Her work draws from Indian folk and miniature traditions, including Gond, Godna, Madhubani, and Pahari art, as well as Punjabi literature. Women, nature, figures, and recurring motifs such as scissors feature prominently in her visual storytelling. Her practice spans painting, printmaking, and sculpture, often incorporating myths, stories, and spiritual themes. In 1995, she created Tears from Hiroshima, a mural commissioned by the Hiroshima Museum of Modern Art to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing.
