S. R. Bhushan

S.R. Bhushan (b. 1938, Karimganj, Bangladesh) was a versatile Indian artist whose practice encompassed painting, sculpture, printmaking, and collage. He graduated from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, in 1961, studying under Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij, and later studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, with a French Government fellowship. A founding member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta, Bhushan experimented with marble, steel, fibre glass, corrugated paper, and screen printing. His largely non-representational works sought to move beyond conventional reality while retaining an underlying tension and intensity. He served as Director of the Design and Development Centre, Goa, and later the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. His honours included the AIFACS Award, President’s Gold Plaque, and Lalit Kala Akademi National Award.
