Francis Newton Souza, born on 12 April 1924 in Goa, was a pioneering Indian modern artist and founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group. After being expelled from Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, he pursued his artistic career in Europe, achieving recognition in London during the 1950s and 1960s before settling in New York. Souza developed a distinctive style influenced by expressionism, cubism, and classical Indian sculpture. His works included nudes, landscapes, and portraits, created across various media. Known for his bold lines and intense imagery, he also developed a technique called “chemical alterations,” using solvents to create layered imagery on printed pages. Although widely exhibited internationally, Souza received limited recognition in India. He spent increasing time in India during his later years and passed away in Mumbai on 28 March 2002.
