Catfield Douglas, born in Tellicherry, Kerala, belongs to the third generation of artists associated with the Madras Art Movement. After graduating from the Government College of Art and Craft, Madras, in the 1970s, he moved to Cholamandal Artists’ Village in the early 1990s. His expressionist and anthropocentric practice developed through deep introspection and influences from narrative, fantastical, Expressionist, and Bauhaus traditions encountered in India and abroad. Douglas has experimented extensively with materials, particularly paper, altering its texture through crumpling, burning, and repeated immersion in water. He received the Lalit Kala Akademi National Award in 1992 and cultural fellowships from the Government of India. In 1994, he received the Charles Wallace Grant to study ceramics in the Netherlands. He continues to live and work in Chennai.
