Jagdish Swaminathan was an influential Indian artist known for establishing Bharat Bhavan, a multi-arts complex in Bhopal, and for bringing tribal art into greater national recognition. Born in Simla on 21 June 1928, he initially pursued a pre-medical course before becoming involved in politics, social activism, journalism, and writing. Disillusioned with politics in the 1950s, he returned to painting and briefly studied art in Delhi and Warsaw. His artistic journey included neo-tantric works and later explorations of colour, space, and Pahari miniatures, resulting in series such as Colour Geometry of Space, Bird, Mountain, and Tree. He founded Group 1890 in 1962 and supported tribal artists through Bharat Bhavan’s Roopankar museum. He passed away in 1994.
